School Meals

The Sheboygan Area School District cafeterias are meeting federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. 

As of September 1, 2020, school breakfast and lunch meals are free to all district students per the USDA extension of emergency meals. This is effective through December 31, 2020. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school breakfast and lunch!

Please note we are not offering a "milk only" choice at any school for the 2020-2021 school year. Students who wish to participate in school meals will be offered a complete meal only.

* The School Nutrition Program eliminated costs to families for reduced prices meals effective September 1, 2016. This means that if you qualify for “reduced-price meals” your child will be able to receive a meal completely for free at no extra charge to you. Previously there was a small price of $0.30 to $0.40 per breakfast/lunch meal. That cost no longer applies.

^The following schools are under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) which allows all enrolled students to receive breakfast and lunch at no cost: Central High School, Jefferson Elementary, Longfellow Elementary, and Sheridan Elementary.

The Sheboygan Area School District understands the importance of serving nutritious meals daily to our students. If meals are purchased through the school nutrition program, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to keep a positive account balance in the students account. The District uses a pre-payment system for meal accounts, and payment is to be made prior to consuming meals. In order to provide clarity and accountability surrounding the school nutrition program, the following policies regarding student meal account balances have been put in place:

Each day after the deposits have been made, a file is created of all families whose lunch account is at or below $5. A notice will be sent out through School Messenger to these families letting them know their balance and asking them to deposit money into their students account. To avoid the phone calls, parent/guardians should maintain an account balance greater than $5. A monthly file of all families whose lunch account balance is $20 or more in the negative will be sent to the Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operational Services. The Assistant Superintendent will take additional action to collect on these accounts.

No a la carte items may be purchased on account if there is a negative account balance. Students are allowed to pay with cash.

If a child transfers, moves or graduates from the Sheboygan Area School District and has a positive balance left in the meals account, parents/guardians have the following options:

* Funds will automatically be transferred to a sibling account.
* Funds may be refunded to the parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must request a refund in writing to the School Nutrition Department by June 15 of that current school year, and a refund will be sent to the address provided.
* Funds may be donated to an account to help other families. If there is no request for refund by June 15, and there is not a sibling in the district, any account balance amount of $10 or less will automatically be transferred to an account to help other families.

If a current student has positive funds in their meal account and currently does not use the account, a refund can be requested in writing to the School Nutrition Department any time during the school year.

Healthy Changes

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on total calories, sodium, saturated fat and portion size. Since the September 2014, school meals are made to meet additional standards requiring:

• Age-appropriate calorie limits
• Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
• A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
• Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
• More whole grains
• And less sodium

What Does a Meal Include?

What does a School Breakfast include?

Breakfast

  • The breakfast meal offers an entree of whole grains or whole grains and protein source, ½ cup of 100% juice, additional ½ cup serving of fruit, and milk. Based on preferences, students must select 3 of the meal components offered at breakfast, including at least one fruit option.
  • Breakfasts offered as part of the School Breakfast Program must meet current dietary guidelines.
  • Breakfasts must contain ¼ of a child’s daily requirement for calories, protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.
  • No more than 30% of calories can come from fat, with no more than 10% of calories as saturated fat.
  • Students need to take two or three items including at least 1 serving of fruit to have a complete reimbursable breakfast.

How much does a breakfast cost?

Students approved for free or reduced meals or who attend a Community Eligible Provision School for the 2017-18 school year may eat one breakfast meal free each day. Students at Universal Free Breakfast Schools, also receive one breakfast meal free each day. Students who don’t qualify for free and reduced meals are allowed to purchase one breakfast meal at the rate of $1.40.

At the middle and high school level, any student that selects additional foods or beverages beyond what the breakfast meal includes must purchase these foods with additional funds at the a la carte price. Or if students don’t select enough components to have a reimbursable breakfast they will be charged for the items individually. Each item is charged as follows. All extra purchases require funds to be available (on meal account or in hand) at the time of purchase.

What does a School Lunch include?

The Sheboygan Area School District participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). We have federal requirements to serve a nutritionally balanced lunch to all students.

The lunch meal offers 5 meal components. An entrée that includes the protein component and grains component, fruit component, vegetable component, and milk component. Students must select at least 3 of the meal components (including at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetable). Students can decline 2 components. Students can look at the signs in the cafeteria to learn what makes up each lunch.

Why does it cost more to purchase items individually rather than a complete reimbursable meal?

The NSLP provides reimbursement in addition to or in place of the $2.60 to $3.05 lunch cost for every reimbursable meal served; the district does not receive any NSLP reimbursement for individual items sold, only balanced meals.

A La Carte Purchases Beyond a Meal

Other selected other foods, juice and water beverages that comply with the USDA Smart Snacks guidelines may be purchased a la carte to compliment school meals or meals brought from home. The Smart Snack guidelines require that the first ingredient of all snacks be a whole grain, fruit, vegetable or dairy food, that snacks be low in sugars, sodium, and within strict calories per serving limits. Schools may offer different selections of a la carte items. All extra purchases from School Nutrition require funds to be available (on meal account or in hand) at the time of purchase.

The “Smart Snacks” rule, which establishes guidelines for competitive foods sold on the school campus during the school day, became effective July 1, 2014.

What does this mean? and to whom does this apply?
It means that school stores, vending accessible to students, snack bars in the lunchrooms, food sold as fundraising (when students can eat it during the day), etc. have to follow specific guidelines for what food or beverage products can be sold.

Foods and beverages sold in schools must now meet both general standards and specific nutrient standards to be considered a smart snack. If they do not, they cannot be sold unless they qualify as an exemption.

Definitions
Competitive foods: ALL foods and beverages SOLD TO STUDENTS on the school campus during the school day, other than reimbursable meals

School campus: all areas of the property under the jurisdiction of the school that are accessible to students during the school day

School day: the period from the midnight before to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day

Note regarding Fundraisers/Exemptions:
The Wisconsin DPI allows two fundraiser exemptions per student organization per school year. An exempt fundraiser may sell foods and beverages that are not allowable under the Smart Snacks rule, but may not compete directly with the sale of reimbursable meals (ie. not in the cafeteria during lunch time). These fundraisers must be tracked.

Afterschool snacks give children a nutritional boost and draw them into supervised activities that are safe, fun and filled with learning opportunities. The Sheboygan Area School District School Nutrition Program offers free snacks to children after their regular school day ends at select schools that qualify. Currently, after-school snacks are offered at the following schools:

  • Grant Elementary
  • Jackson Elementary
  • Jefferson Elementary
  • Longfellow Elementary
  • Sheridan Elementary

The afterschool snack typically offered is 6 fl oz of 100% fruit and vegetable juice and a package of whole grain crackers. At some after-school snack sites, Nourish Farms, provides an alternative snack for the students that still meet the nutritional requirements of the after-school snack program. 

The Sheboygan Area School District School Nutrition Department has expanded into offering Supper Programs for our students. Supper is currently offered at Central High School and North High School at the end of each school day, Monday through Thursday.

Supper meals are FREE to all students. Each meal includes the following, students must take at least 3 of the 5 components, including a fruit or vegetable

  • Choice of milk
  • Meat or meat alternate with a grain (i.e. turkey ham wrap, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, meat and cheese sandwich etc.)
  • Two different servings of fruits or vegetables

Food Allergies & Special Dietary Needs

If your child has a food allergy or condition that affects his/her food intake and he/she plans to eat school meals, please print off the “Special Dietary Request Form” below and have it completed by a licensed medical practitioner (a healthcare provider who can prescribe medication) to request substitute foods/beverages.
