Free and Reduced Meal is a benefit available for qualifying families. It guarantees that your child is able to receive free breakfast and lunch meals at school at no cost to you. There are so many students qualifying for free and reduced meals but not taking advantage of it.

This government-sponsored program is totally confidential. The software used for processing applications and counting daily student meals is private and confidential; as children receive their breakfast or lunch through the school lunch line, there is no way any other person can know the financial situation of your child.

  • Letters are mailed at the end of July to all applicants who were pre-approved by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for free meals. School age student(s) listed on the letter are not required to have an application on file. If a student's name(s) from your household is missing on the letter, please call Dawn at 459-3568; per DPI we can automatically approve your child for free meals because the approval is based on the entire household.
  • Parents will receive a letter indicating approval for free or reduced lunch status. All letters sent from this office notifying your household of free and reduced status should be kept. Please do not throw the letter away. These letters can be used as proof of eligibility for discounts on other programs/testing offered within the Sheboygan Area School District and Recreation Department.
  • Additionally, if your household's total income is below certain amounts, your child can eat free. You must fill out an application.
  • On paper: Pick up an application at any school office or download a paper application at the appropriate web link below.

Reduced Price Meal Costs Eliminated

The School Nutrition Program eliminated costs to families for reduced prices meals. This means that if you qualify for “reduced-price meals” your child will be able to receive a meal completely for free at no extra charge to you. Previously there was a small price of $0.30 to $0.40 per breakfast/lunch meal. That cost will no longer apply.

REMINDER: If you qualified for Free and Reduced Meals last school year (2018-19), families need to reapply and qualify for Free and Reduced Meals by October 14, 2019. Children in families who have not turned in new applications will not have free meals after October 14, 2019. You may reapply anytime throughout the school year, but Free Meals will be stopped on October 15th and will not resume until we have processed a new approved application. If you have not completed a lunch application before your benefits drop, please make sure to have funds in your child(ren) lunch accounts to pay for meals until you receive the approval letter.
