Horace Mann

Welcome HMMS Students and Parents!

We are excited to start another year at Horace Mann Middle School. We continue to grow in enrollment and have added multiple teachers (we now have ALL 4 person teams at every grade) and have new teaching and support staff in our building as well. We are privileged to work with your children and continue to build our capacity to meet the needs of the whole child. We take pride in a history of providing a student centered education, having highly trained staff, and continuously improving our practices.

This is my second year as Principal at Horace Mann and I’m joined by Brian Hinn as our Assistant Principal in his 2nd year as well. Together we have introduced a few initiatives last year and will continue many of those this year and build on others. We will be entering our third year of Middle School sports and are always providing a variety of co-curricular offerings for those not in sports. Our goal is for every student to be involved in some activity or organization beyond their academics—call our office or visit our website to see what we have to offer! We continue to make our learning community a safe and healthy place to be. We do this through ALICE safety drills, mental health training for our staff, partnerships to provide services through PATH (providing access to healing) for our students, and other ways.

In our classrooms and programming, the use of technology is ever present in our lives and at HMMS we focus on when it is needed to maximize learning, use proper digital citizenship, and when it is best to unplug. We will constantly remind students of what resources are available to them here at school through their chromebooks, use of Haiku (class books, resources, etc), Skyward (grades, attendance, contact information), and how all of these elements are accessible from home as well. A continuation from last year is to build a passion for learning and excitement about what we offer at school. We will have a variety of learning options during WIN period this year—to engage students in areas of interest—with incorporated reading and writing.

We invite family and the support system of our students to contact or visit us whenever needed. Being at school matters for our students—so any conversations or help we can provide to make it an inviting and positive place—we want to know! Thank you for letting us work with your students and we are honored to serve the SASD community and beyond.
